On Saturday October 14 2017 Around the Campfire Inc will host the 3rd annual Around the Campfire Cup at iconic Alberton Oval in Port Adelaide. The Around the Campfire Cup is a women’s AFL carnival held between 4 teams which include combinations of Indigenous and non-Indigenous women from across SA and NT. These teams will play a round robin format and play 3 2x15 min games each, with the top 2 teams playing in the final for the Around the Campfire Cup.
The teams involved in 2017 will be the Port Adelaide Womens Football Club, Adelaide University FC Women, SA Aboriginal Womens All-Stars, and the Central Australian Pinktails.
This year we will have joint Master of Ceremonies creating atmosphere and excitement at Alberton Oval. AFLW ambassador and Marngrook host Shelley Ware, and ex-AFL footballer now Adelaide media personality Troy Gray will work together throughout the day to generate togetherness and the Around the Campfire spirit on the field and among the 3000 people who attend.
Our opening ceremony will be something spectacular. Being led by Senior Kaurna Custodian Karl Winda Telfer who will present a Greeting to Country, before Yellaka - Old Wisdom, New Ways, comprising of young Aboriginal men and women perform traditional and contemporary dance. Karl and Yellaka will involve the 4 teams in the inspiring traditional ceremony to begin the carnival. Educating and inspiring non-Indigenous people playing or spectating, reconnecting and showing respect to Indigenous people with their culture.
As a finish to the day Indigenous rock singer/songwriter Scott Darlow and his band will entertain the crowd. Scott tours Australia every week educating schools on Indigenous history and promoting reconciliation. He is a World Vision Australia ambassador.
The carnival is an opportunity to bring people together, learn or reconnect with Indigenous culture, create new friendships and networks, and to promote women as leaders in health and wellbeing, and as role models in their community.
All proceeds from the day will go to the development and operation of Around the Campfire Inc health initiatives in remote Indigenous communities to improve Indigenous youth health and opportunity.
